Lykketoft said that the UN State members are asking for the beginning of the process, in view of the key role played by the secretary general in the management and efficiency of the United Nations.
According to Lykketoft, during his one-year term he expects to interact with the Security Council to meet the expectations of the international community in this regard, less that a year from the end of Ban Ki-moon's term.
Lykketoft called for increased rigor in elections, from the beginning of the applications by candidates till the meetings of the Assembly with candidates, seeking to promote transparency an inclusion.
Regarding the characteristics of the future secretary general, he said that this person should be the best candidate for having competence, integrity, commitment to the UN Charter, experience in international relations and communicative and multilingual skills.
Currently, the Security Council suggests the person that will take the post for a five-year term, with the possibility of being reelected, and then this candidate is appointed by the General Assembly, following a secret vote in a private meeting.
Lykketoft said during the discussion staged by the 15-member organization that it must be taken into account that the United Nations is made up of 193 States.
Most of the countries ask for a more transparent, democratic and participatory Security Council.
Lykketoft's speech at the Security Council was just the seventh given by a president of the Assembly in the 70 years of the United Nations, and the first one in eight years.
